Do you think it’s possible for a family of clutterbugs to adopt a minimalist lifestyle?

joe friday’s grrl asked:

I come from a long line of messies, who keep lots of unnecessary stuff that we will probably not use again, or wouldn’t miss if it was gone. I’m now a single mom of two teens, and they’ve adopted the family tradition. We’re not exactly hoarders, in that there’s plenty of space to sit down and live comfortably. Guests don’t mind visiting our home at all, and seem to like like to “cozy” and lived in feel of it. But we get pretty disgusted ourselves and depressed when we look around, and the task of decluttering seems monumental. We do it it spurts , but it never seems to stay that way.

Here’s the thing: We now live in a large, older home, but I want to build a very small, eco-friendly house soon. I would really like a house with clean, contemporary line, minimalist in terms of furniture and ’stuff’. Actually, the house wouldn’t be big enough to accommodate a lot of stuff; only 900 sq. ft. I feel like we would be so much happier, and less anxious and stressed in that kind of environment. Is it likely that we can accomplish such a change in lifestyle?
Sometimes, I want to just let somebody come in, tell them what absolutely needs to be kept, and let them have at it. For us to just leave the house until they’re done.

Sony Vaio VGN-FW490 Configured (Help Find Better Offer)?

Monday, August 24th, 2009
L asked:

This is the laptop I have customized from Sonystyle.com. Even with the education discount for being a college student and free shipping, it is being priced at $1,006.99.

Sony Vaio FW series (VGN-FW490 CTO)

Here are the specs:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53GHz)
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD4650 graphics card with 512MB vRAM
16.4″ widescreen with XBRITE-ECO™ LCD technology (1600×900)
320GB SATA Hard Disk Drive [5400 rpm]
4GB DDR2-SDRAM (DDR2-800, 2GBx2)
CD/DVD playback/burning
WLAN (802.11a/b/g/n) with integrated Bluetooth® technology
Standard Capacity Battery
Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium 64-bit (I have Vista now and I don’t mind it so much)
Microsoft® Office 2007 Home/Student
Norton Internet Security
Quickbooks Simple Start 2009

I looked on Newegg and at Best Buy, but I can’t find a real equivalent to this. Either their processors are only 2.1GHz or they lack Microsoft Office (essential, as I am a college student and writing major).

One thing I can’t seem to get a straight answer on involves the 10/100 RJ45 network adapter and driver software that any computer I decide to buy needs to have or else I can’t get internet in my dorm room. Does this come standard with all laptops? When I customized this one, there wasn’t any kind of option to pick that or anything.

I’m a college student so my main use for this laptop is the normal internet stumbling and writing papers. I’m also into art however, and will be buying a Bamboo Fun in order to draw on the computer and I will need tons of space to store my music library and photography. I want to do some basic gaming, but nothing really serious.

Mostly, I just want to know if there is a better price out there.
I appreciate the help tremendously!

How can my boyfriend get creditors to stop calling him?

Thursday, August 20th, 2009
jeanbee86 asked:

Three years ago, my boyfriend’s mom had a stroke. She was put in a nursing home for a few months but then returned back to live at her house, with my boyfriend, ever since. About two months ago, my boyfriend started getting calls from ECO (I think that’s their name), a creditor company stating that since they failed to pay a bill, it went into collections and was now hundreds of dollars! My boyfriend handles everything for his mother, and knew he had paid all of the bills they had gotten so he was puzzled. When he tried to find out more about the bill, the person on the phone became rude and tried to scare him by saying if he didn’t give out his mom’s banking info to pay the bill, it would go up daily (he didn’t of course). He asked for a bill to be mailed to him, and when they received it, it was very vauge and looked like something anyone could type up. It didn’t specify what the bill was for, it just said “hospital”, and showed the mom’s insurance information (which by the way, this “bill” didn’t get sent to). It also had been sent to his mom’s nursing home address originally after she had returned home, and because of this never got a chance to see the original bill, nor a chance to pay it (or they would have). Since they never got to see the original bill, and have no clue what it is for, my boyfriend and his mom are reluctant to pay it, as it could be a scam. Who can they turn to for help in handling this matter?

Thank you and sorry it’s so long!

Acer Aspire 5100?

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009
☺☻☺☻ asked:

I have a Acer aspire 5100 running Windows Vista Home premuim so it constantly displayes Vista aero glass Which is an amazing picture. But when I bought the laptop 3 months ago the salesmen told me it would get 6 hours of battery life on the factory setting right out of the box and it would 6 hours for 6 monthes then go down 20 minutes every 6 monthes. So I turned it on and it said 2 hours of battery left so i put it on all the eco setting to save more battery and it said 140 minutes. After that I just went with it but then i realized it was going down 20 minutes every 10 minutes I got about 45 minutes on it. I have tryed it every way watching movies leaving it alone no matter what I get 140 minutes out of it. Right now I can not afford another battery and acer will not replace it. And I have the computer on the most power saving energy settings. I dont know if it could be the aero glass taking up somuch power but I cant turn aero. By the way I have a ATI 1100.

What if Barney Frank ran for Governor of Alabama?

Sunday, August 16th, 2009
Eric S asked:

I’m talking about Barney Frank making a move from Massachusetts down to The South to create Liberal changes to the state of Alabama.

In an effort protect the state of Alabama and The South from the recession, Barney Frank would introduce radical changes to the Southern State.

1) All towns in Western Alabama will be forced by the state Governor Barney Frank to form a socialist colony and experiment with equal wealth society under Liberal principles.

2) Barney Frank would impose a tax on gasoline that the state would use to build a high-speed rail from Mobile to Birmingham as an emergency escape route for poor people in the event of another Hurricane Katrina.

3) Alabama would experience state income and tax property tax increases, but this money would be used to fund a state welfare system to help the poor people use the money to buy and mortgage new homes.

4) Alabama would legalize gay/lesbian marriage.

5) Marijuana would be legalized across the entire state of Alabama, most benefiting the hippie tribes of the forests of Northern Alabama

6) State funding under Barney Frank would ensure that every town in Alabama has no more than 1 McDonalds and at least 1 healthy organic vegetarian restaurant.

7) Smoking would be banned in all restaurants in Alabama, if not already.
8) Alabama would eliminate speed limits on all highways and NO speed traps.

9) Alabama would have stricter state standards on reducing carbon emissions to be the most eco-friendly state in America.

10) Alabama would develop its own film industry comparable to Hollywood and Mobile on the Gulf would be a celebrity town filled with stars of the rich and famous.

11) A population of 400,000 Liberal anarchist revolutionaries and feminists and hippies and vegans and Pride members from San Francisco, Philly, Greater Boston, Brooklyn New York, and Hollywood and Vegas would settle in a corner of Montgomery, Alabama and have nude outdoor acoustic guitar concerts.

Would Alabama residents be up for this NEW state of Alabama under the Governorship of Barney Frank?
